Need Home Help!

I’m here because I have enjoyed Melissa’s blog for so very long. I appreciate her home decorating, but mostly I hear her heart of hospitality and care for people.  That said, I really need help to love my home!  I married my Mr. Wonderful almost two years ago and moved into the home where he has lived with his daughters for nearly ten years.  He did a great job of making space for me and for my own three children, and I’ve done what I know to add my own sense of style to our place.

However, I’m often struck with the thought that things are not what I would have chosen: wall color, counter tops (seriously, tile?), all of those things.  I must constantly keep my attitude in check in order to be grateful.  It’s the most expensive home in which I’ve ever lived, but it isn’t reflective of me.

So, that’s why I’m here!  Our funds are so minimal.  I can’t do the big things that would make an impact, so I’m here for help and support to do what I can!

Hi Missy! I’m so glad that you’re here! There is a lot of inspiration to be found, and I think that all of us are looking for ideas for small budget changes to make our homes reflect us. Have fun! (my two cents worth: buy one gallon of paint in your favorite color and start with one room. you’ll be amazed at how good you feel!)

    Hi Missy,
I agree with Kimm, painting one room in a color you love may help you to feel more at home. Also, I find hanging family photos always makes a space feel more personal. Small changes can have a big impact.

I agree with Kim, start with one room and a paint color. Still stuck – post a photo of the room you want to start with and ask for help again. Tell us what you like and what is bugging you about the room. It might help to start in a small room, or a room that is the most personal to you, like your bedroom. Good luck!

What a great idea to get started with paint! That can totally change your mood. My husband painted our house all brown before I met him and I hated it. Last spring, we painted a different color and it has deeply impacted my view of my home. Good luck!! 🙂

You are a brave and bold woman to blend your families together in this way. Pssh, fixing up your house ain’t gonna be nothing compared to that. Paint, as these ladies have recommended, is brilliant. Let your spaces evolve, as you and your husband decide what feels right. Trust yourself.

And if you ever feel discouraged about your home, go out and sit on the porch, as shown in your photo, because it is absolutely gorgeous!!

I was thinking the same thing. A gallon of paint is a great first step. Also, swap out some pictures on the wall with ones that represent the both of you. I would also get the kids involved, maybe some art work on a gallery wall and have the older ones do a craft night with you. It would be a great way for you all to spend quality time! Pinterest has wonderful seasonal crafting ideas.
