Master Bedroom Update/Questions?

After months of planning and searching for items, we finally started our bedroom makeover this week. I’m off for spring break, so hubby took a couple of days too. Here’s our progress so far…(sorry for the terrible pictures, it’s dark and stormy today).

Here’s a picture with the lights on, hopefully that shows the colors better. In my last post, I said I wanted everything different. Now I’m second guessing what I have done. Don’t get me wrong, I like the colors and duvet. I just feel something’s missing and I can’t place what it is. My head says keep going forward so I can see the end result.

The lamp and alarm clock will be replaced. Next up I have purple drapes to hang. I’m currently looking for curtain rods. For lamps, I will look for something either black or dark bronze. To go with the dark brown in the duvet and tv on the opposite wall. Thanks to Nancy for that suggestion! =) For accessories, I thought of adding something small in the green color on each nightstand, a frame or a small dish for rings, etc. Just a touch of the green color.
Last, I’m toying with the idea of painting my nightstands a cream color then giving them a distressed look. All my furniture is oak and matches. I’m tired of that look.
So my questions are:
Is this too matchy? There are so many colors in this duvet, it’s hard to decide which to highlight.
Am I going purple over board with the drapes and sheets? I’ve never had purple so I think that’s some of my issue. I’m way out of my comfort zone here! =)

I would love any comments/suggestions you might have! Thanks so much!

**Update** Below I added two pics of drape options. The left is the purple and the right is my brown panels. Excuse the tape, searching for rods, and the terrible lighting. =) Sorry the are sideways, I couldn’t figure out how to rotate them. Anyway, it almost seems a wash to me. The brown ones do bring out the brown/khaki in the duvet. They also might help center the room with bronze lamps. I had them up before and my room wasn’t too dark. The purple ones are a tad more shimmery. (If that’s a word.)

Oh! I forgot to add today I am ordering a gray quilt to drape over the end of my bed. I was thinking I could use the quilt in the spring/summer with the duvet folded up at the end of the bed. Then reverse it, to use the duvet during the fall/winter, with the quilt folded at the end of extra warmth. It’s the pick stitch quilt from pottery barn in flagstone gray.

Hi Wendy! I have been meaning to comment on your previous post about your bedroom makeover. Then I forgot! Sorry. I really like the choices you made for your bedroom, especially the wall color. I did my Master Bedroom makeover last Spring. It was a bit of a challenge because it was completely opposite of what my bedroom looked like before. I too have matching oak wood furniture similar to your color. I feel that there is no reason to buy all new furniture when your on a budget. But you can still make a room look totally different by changing everything else if your budget allows you to.
When I originally purchased my oak bedroom set, I only bought one night stand for my husbands side of the bed. So, when I decided to redo my bedroom, I purchased an off white night stand from Pottery Barn (LOVE Pottery Barn!). I like the mixed match look of the night stands. Maybe you can try something like that for a little change.
I think the purple drapes may make the room too dark. It’s all “Trial and Error”. I did a lot of buying and returning until I was happy with the look I wanted to acheive. I like the oak colored frame around your window. I would suggest either leaving them as is or maybe purchasing off white sheer textured 84″ set of curtains and leave them open on either side of the window.
I can’t wait to see the final out come of your bedroom!
It can get a little frustrating, but try to make it a fun process. 🙂

    Hi,

I think your bedroom is looking really pretty.

I think painting the nightstands would be a great idea and help to lighten up the space a little. I do think purple drapes may be a little too much with the sheets you have chosen. It’s really a challenge finding the right drape color/pattern when you’re trying to match something you already have in a space.

What color are the walls painted?

    Hi Ladies,
Thanks so much for the feedback. My walls are called Galveston Gray by Benjamin Moore. It’s a mid-tone gray. I wish we would get out of the gray skies and thunderstorms here. My room actually has a lot more light than in the pictures.
Good news, I could still return my purple drapes (Tuesday is the deadline). Bad news, I have no clue what color I would do. I think cream would be to stark against the gray walls. I did keep my brown ones. I will play with those this afternoon. Not sure how they would look with the gray walls, but there’s brown in the duvet.
I wanted to change everything, I’ve had a variation of the same color scheme since we moved in over 20 yrs ago. But now this is driving me crazy! Hahaha! =) I wish I could just have a designer from Pottery Barn (one of my fav) come in and do it! But my budget says no!=)

Hi Wendy, I love the changes you have made to your bedroom so far. Love your bedding….it’s so colorful and relaxing at the same time. You mentioned cream colored drapes may be too stark with the wall color, but maybe not. It may actually make all the pretty colors in the duvet pop. Just an idea – I also think the brown panels could work if you end up painting the nightstands a light color. It’s amazing how paint can make a piece of furniture feel new again. Adding small pops of color on top of the nightstands is a great idea too. Can’t wait to see more pictures as you go along!

Yes, I agree with Anne about the lighter drapes may look really good. Also, when you paint the nightstands, you could get some bigger/unique knobs for the drawer fronts to really make the furniture standout too. Once you get your lamps too it will make all the difference.

Can’t wait to see how it all comes together.

Thanks so much! I REALLY appreciate the help and I think you were right!! I ran into town to pick up any cream panel I could find, just for color. (I added the picture at the end so everyone could see.) I think I like this one the best!! I was so sure it wouldn’t work with the gray walls. I’m thinking I can still change my nightstands but do some color for the lamps…maybe! =) So that everything isn’t cream and bronze.
I think the cream actually frames the bed and makes it pop! Who knew!!

I really like the cream panel, and you’re right, it does frame the bed. It looks great! And I agree with the suggestion of changing the knobs on the nightstands….glass knobs would look really pretty. Adding color with new lamps is such a good idea and I think choosing any of the colors in the duvet would work. Your bedroom is really looking pretty!

Yes! Definitely liking the cream drapes. It makes everything not seem so heavy.

Sometimes it just takes fresh eyes to see what might need tweaking. 😉

Also, have you thought about putting your rod up and out quite a bit from the window? Just to make the window seem bigger. You would want the edges of your drapes to start where the window molding begins.. Hope that makes sense?? It will make it seem like you have a much bigger window behind the bed. Great trick!

Anne and T Lucas, thanks for the comments! I plan to look for rods and lamps this weekend. I’m so surprised how much I like the cream. I would of never guessed! That’s why I asked for opinions. You’re right T, sometimes it takes a different eye. 😉
I hung my drapes outside my window last time and will do it again this time. You’re right, it’s a great trick!

I like the cream too, nice and airy for the spring and summer. You could always save the purple or brown ones for another option to change to for the winter months, they will give a warmer cozy feeling to the colder months. Also one thing that is suggested on a lot of design blogs is to move your curtains up to the ceiling as well as to the outside of the frame to make the windows seem larger and the room taller. So far the room is looking great, can’t wait to see it progress.

    Hi Wendy!

You’re off to a great start. I would definitely go with the cream drapes – hang them as high and wide over the window as you can. This will make a beautiful, soft backdrop against your bed. I really like the idea of painting your nightstands too. Best of luck, can’t wait to see the progress!! 🙂

I cast another vote for the cream drapes and wide curtain rod. Things are looking good.

I see that you seem to favor the same look that I do – large scale patterns and solids. I find that if something feels off in my rooms, I experiment with adding some smaller patterns or medium scale accessories. A variety of scale warms up the room and adds interest. Just a thought.

Diane, I never noticed I used larger patterns and solids until you pointed it out! I’m going to try your advice on the smaller patterns and medium accessories. Maybe that’s why I feel my rooms are off sometimes. Thanks for the tip!

Looking great Wendy! I agree with the girls. Cream on the drapery and high and wide. I also was thinking like Maria and mixing night stand styles. You could always use the second one in another part of the house. If that doesn’t work for you, I’m sure painting them will give you a nice change. Junkyard Chick has a lot of posts on painting and distressing furniture and will probably be a good place for inspiration. Must say I’m proud of you for taking the plunge and going out of your comfort zone…I started that last year when I was redoing my living room. It still surprises me to see large-patterned chairs in my room but it delights me too!

Thanks Nancy! I’ve decided to leave the night stands until the very last thing. This way as the room evolves I can think about what I want to do. I can honestly say this room now catches my eye every time I walk by. It’s so very different from anything I’ve had before, but I’m enjoying the change!
