Sun Porch In Summer

This Sun Porch is our most favorite spot in the house for relaxation! I Know Summer is almost over, but this is our little seasonal getaway. Our Sun Porch is made up of a mix of old furniture and and decor that used to be in our home that I just can’t part with. I have several slip covers for each season and believe me, these light colored ones are the most difficult covers to keep clean! Especially, with a slobbery English Bulldog who sheds! We have an air conditioning unit in the Summer (which I just covered for this photo. He! He!) and a Mister Heater that keeps us warm in the Winter.

This is where my husband and I have some cool beverages on Friday nights after a long week of working. Aah!! Also, weekend morning coffees and pop-in visitors(GRRR!).

The futon above, we originally bought for our daughter’s room, for guest sleepovers. We had recently bought her a new larger dresser and somehow this wound up on our back porch. It actually worked out better than I thought, for when we have guests come over and for when our kids just want to hang out with us or with their friends.

Our Home is not very big, but having this back porch makes it a better place to live and love life!!  :)

Hi Maria, I think your porch is perfect. It’s pretty as well as comfy which is most important in my book. There’s something about enjoying the outdoors without having to worry about bugs and weather. I love the pillows on your couch, in particular the “you are my anchor”. Everyone needs one of those!!

Thank you Barb! Yes, I had to get that pillow as soon as I saw it for a little bit of Summer Inspiration! The back porch was a deal breaker when we bought this house. Originally, the Sun Porch just had screens and deck flooring. We wanted to make this porch something we could use every season, so a few years after we moved in, my husband and I measured each window (NINE), then ordered and installed the windows ourselves to save money. We covered the wood decking with plywood and added thick padding and carpet to insulate the room better. So far, it has worked well for us. We were thinking of adding a gas stove like the one we have in our family room for the cold winter months instead of the Mister Heater. Thank you for stopping by, πŸ™‚

That looks like the kind of place to curl up with a good book and a mug of hot chocolate. Is that stained glass hanging in the window? It looks beautiful

Yes Cherie, it is the BEST place for any of us to relax whenever! And the hanging pendant is stained glass that I previously had hanging in the window opening between my kitchen and living room. I’m not as talented as you are when it comes to crafting, so I didn’t make it. I like the pendant hanging from a real window in the Sun Porch. Especially, in the early morning hours when the sun shines right through it and I can look at from my kitchen window. It looks so pretty then! πŸ™‚

LOVE IT! I was thinking exactly what Barb said! So cozy and comfy! Where did you find the pillow? I am heading to Maine and Cape Cod next week and will be on the look out for treasures like that. πŸ™‚

Thank you Nancy! I found the “You Are My Anchor” pillow at Marshalls ( A Discount Store near where I live) earlier in the Summer season. Unfortunately, it’s one of those stores that may only carry one, or two (at the most), of the same item. I know Pottery Barn carries pillow covers with sayings on them, if you like to order things online. Thank you for stopping by πŸ™‚

I love it, Maria! I detected a coastal vibe in your living room area you shared previously, and I see that you’ve carried it out to the porch. All the furnishings work well together and look very comfy. I’m envious of your ability to control the heat. My sunroom has floor to ceiling windows on 2 1/2 sides, and the roof is also open to the sun. The windows (aside from the sliding glass door) don’t open, so I can’t install a window a/c, which actually would be very hard to find in Europe anyway. I can’t install a ceiling fan either because the rafters are too thin to hold one. I have fabric roller shades with blackout backing to help keep the sun from heating the room, but that sort of defeats the purpose of enjoying the view. I also have a retractable awning over the roof, but it automatically raises and lowers when the wind gusts shift. That happens so much here in windy Belgium that it frequently causes the mechanism to go beserk and short a fuse.. I have to reset it daily during the summer, and it causes the room to become unbearably hot if we’ve been away for more than a day! I’m still working on a solution–I’ll figure it out one day. Until then, my sunroom is most comfortable in autumn or spring, not summer!

Thank you Jennifer! I hope you can find some solutions for both heating and cooling for your Sun Porch, so you can use it all year round. I would do some online research to see if there are any alternatives. πŸ™‚

Maria, I have found some interesting low-cost ideas on Pinterest. I’m not ready to replace the roof or windows any time soon, so I’ve gravitated towards attractive fabric panel shades that hang in scalloped fashion from the ceiling and can be manually retracted when the sun’s not out. The ceiling slopes, so it will take some DIY ingenuity to design and make something that works well. This was going to be my 2nd “summer challenge”, but I’ve already been stymied while attempting my 1st “summer challenge”, which is something similar for our outdoor dining area under the pergola. I had sewn and hung 8 4m-long fabric shade panels across what I thought were sturdy curtain rods and rails, but they failed the fierce Belgian wind stress test and ended up on the ground after a few hours. Back to the drawing board! Maybe I’ll have something in place in time for next summer…

Thank you Debra! The porch has been a great relaxing spot for us. I grew up in a house with a screened in porch and my family always enjoyed it. So, when we bought this house 19 years ago, the screened in porch is what sold us on it! Years after, we decided to make it an all season porch by adding storm windows. This was well worth it! I’m looking forward to changing out the slip covers, pillows and some decor, to make it feel more cozy during the the Fall and Winter Months. πŸ™‚

    Maria
What an inviting space to hang out with family and friends…the furry ones as well.
Great place to unwind. ….the fact that you made it a four season sunroom really adds that special touch to your home.
    Cheers!
