Opinions, Please!

Ok, neighbors – I’m looking for a little input.  We’ve been working on the outside of our home for the last two summers (landscaping and new front steps are still to come). My husband is going to start building our shutters and I can’t decide what I want to do about the color.

I was thinking gray with a stained front door, similar to this…

Or something weathered with a painted door (I really like the white door), like this…

I like a neutral, classic palette, so I’m not looking for a lot of color, but I’d love to know which combination you’re drawn to, or if you have other suggestions? Thanks all! :)

I am really drawn to the first choice. The gray shutters will really look nice with the roof color. I think the weathered look with the white door might make the house look a little washed out. I think it needs that stronger grey. That being said, I haven’t seen you make a wrong move yet, so trust your instincts. 🙂

I think it really depends on the overall look you’re going for, including landscaping and the front steps. If you want a classical vibe with boxwood, etc, then the shutters in the first picture are the way to go. That’d be a good choice for a more romantic cottage look, too, although the homeowners in the second photo chose to go with rustic romantic. If you want a prairie-style look, the rustic shutters would work. I personally would choose the more refined look, though I’m not a fan of boxwood–the previous owners planted loads of it in our front and back yard, and we’re slowly trying to replace it with more natural-looking plantings. I favor landscaping along the lines of Pete Oudolf’s Lurie Garden design there in Chicago. Our shutters are painted a dark beige to blend with our brick exterior and the bluestone door frame. If they had a weathered look to them, I’d always feel like I needed to re-paint them. Just my two cents…!

What draws me to the first photo is the stained door more than the shutters. I think they give off a warm yet refined clean look. I myself am toying with doing that so maybe I’m a little biased. The second choice, while very cool and I like it, might start to feel a little unfinished over time. You might also have neighbors that just wouldn’t get it too lol. You have great design instincts so I’m sure you’ll make the right choice. It’s nice that the house is white, gives you more choices.

Thanks for the input, ladies! I love a traditional look, but wanted something with a little rustic touch so we decided to give the weathered look a shot – with the logic that if we don’t like it we can always paint over stain, but we can’t stain over paint. Getting the right color of stain has been a process and we’re still not there. Hoping to have the color locked down by the end of the weekend so we can’t get these things on the house! 🙂

I LOVE your house! It’s super cute and something that I’d see in my neighborhood now. We are discussing painting the exterior of our home as well. It’s blue and beginning to chip now and look a bit run down. To make a long story short, I chose to paint it white. I love Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard so I contacted their home historical society and requested they mail me the colours, which they did for free! I was then able to choose the right colour for shutters for the look I wanted to achieve. #1 looks like one of theirs! I’d do #1 😀
    That’s just my opinion

Thank you, Nila! Our shutters are actually all done and up on the house – I’ll post an update soon. 🙂 What a great idea to contact Martha’s Vineyard, I would have never thought to do that, but I love it. You’ll have to take a look and give me some suggestions for a front door color once the new pic is up! 🙂
