Master Bedroom Makeover

The time has come to tackle my master bedroom. I have been thinking about redoing this room for over a year now. My bedroom has always had light walls and colored bedding. This room has been either red, dark green or a combination of both. So rule #1, no red or dark green. Next I wanted to do something completely different, so I thought dark walls and lighter bedding this time. Here’s the current state…Don’t you just love the camouflage fleece throw? That should explain everything right there! Enough said! The only good thing I can say about this is, number one, it’s super warm on these cold Michigan nights and number two, my dogs love it. The little blue blanket in the night stand is where my little Grayson goes when it thunderstorms. He’s scared of those and that’s his safe spot. Poor guy!

Here is my north wall and Cooper wondering what I‘m up to. He’s not camera shy! He‘s taking a moment to peek out the window and make sure that blanket doesn‘t leave the bed!

Last but not least, is the west side of the room. Mainly I think it just needs a update. Time for new colors and a different pattern. No more crazy mismatched blankets. Even the boys bed will get a fresh new look! Here‘s my thoughts so far…

I’ve purchased the duvet and the purple sheets. I also decided to go with the purple drapes. I’m thinking dark gray walls. Then playing up the accents with apple green. I was going to leave the orange alone because my furniture is oak and has an orange hue to it. I’m also toying with the idea of doing something to my night stands. Everything in my house matches and I’m tired of that look. I really like the look of mixing woods and elements. So I thought about staining them cream, while leaving the drawer fronts oak. That‘s where I’m at so far. We are planning on painting in a couple of weeks so I have to get my wall color picked out soon!

I would love to hear your thoughts on what I’ve put together so far. It fun to try something different but scary to step outside your comfort zone! Wish me luck! Thanks…

I LOVE what you’ve chosen so far! The duvet with the warm orange hue is a perfect way to tie in your furniture. The purple drapes are gorgeous! I would choose paint color depending on the light the room gets. If you don’t have much natural light, it would be pretty to choose a lighter color, and go darker if you have more light. I’d test a few colors on the wall before you decide. Remember a cool color like gray will be a complimentary color to the warm tones of the furniture so your furniture will really stand out, a warmer tone on the wall (creamy white) would cause the furniture to blend more, and would really compliment the purple. It just depends on what you like, and I’m sure what you choose will be beautiful! I can’t wait to see more!

Thanks for your thoughts Kimm! I plan on ordering three samples and putting them on the wall for a few days. That way I can see them as the light changes during the day. Color is VERY hard for me. I’ve always done cream/white. But I love it once I finally get it on the walls.

I really like where you are headed. I might suggest a lamp with a bit of black to anchor your lamps and balance the strength of your headboard as well as carry the black from your television. I like the terracotta orange shade in the duvet and might add a small accessory in that shade to pop with your green …a toss cushion, alarm clock or bowl on the nightstand might do the trick. I’m sure you are using the grey tones in your duvet to decide on wall colour but I will tell you That Glidden has a paint colour called Grayish which I used last year and it is really lovely. I have a Northwest exposure and not much light and I was amazed at how it lightened my walls and blended the various tones in my room.

Thanks so much Nancy! I never thought of adding black! That makes sense though…I will be exploring that idea.
You read my mind on the small accessory in green. I’m thinking something on one of our night stands. I just haven’t found that something yet. I’m also looking for a green throw pillow for the bed. Just to add a touch of color.
I will check out the Grayish paint color as well. I’ll take all the help I can with my walls. That’s the hardest part for me. I plan on ordering three samples of gray and seeing which one works best with the duvet. Thanks again…

I have a natural wood armoire like yours and I have been toying for years with the idea of painting it. Since you have so many wooden doors in your room, it might be fun and non-matchy-matchy to refinsh yours – maybe a whitewash that would contrast nicely with your new dark walls.
