Master Bath: Demo Day!

The left is the new wall, top right is the shower and lower right is our contractor being funny

The master bath was always on our list to renovate – it was by far our least favorite aspect of the house. In fact, we almost didn’t buy the house because of the weird layout of the vanity/sink being in the actual bedroom. Of course, things have a way of working themselves out and in April, we realized the shower tile was buckling off the wall and that our bathroom renovation would need to start sooner than planned (by about a year!). No point in doing a temporary fix if we were going to tear it out anyways.

Oh, and while we’re at it (my husband loves it when I say this) we decided to re-do the floors to match the rest of the main house and so we could rip out the gun safe in the corner of the master. Doesn’t everyone want a gun safe in their bedroom taking up a corner that could otherwise have a fantastic piece of furniture? No? People are weird, y’all.

In the master bath, we took out the wall separating the vanity from the water closet and then built a wall, separating the bathroom from the bedroom. Completely understand why people would want to keep the tub/toilet separate and this was something I debated as well. But in the end, to make the most of the space, and to widen the shower (it was pretty narrow at 27 in.), it made more sense to make it all in one room. We have another tub in the hall bathroom so this will be a walk-in shower with a bench.

This week, we’ve got the plumber, electrician and dry wall guy coming. It’s not too bad losing a bathroom for a few weeks since we have two others, but I do miss our King Size bed!

Have you done a bathroom reno? What was your least favorite part? What was your favorite part?

Gun-safe huh? Must be some house you bought. Can’t wait to see how your reno turned out. I love renos in general. I had master bathroom reno 2 years ago. My uncle did it all by himself. I only have a shower stall but someone did a botched job of the tiling. so my uncle totally gutted it and gave me a new stall. I turned out just beautiful. he also gave me a door to the toilet room, which is also inside the master bath. It didn’t come with one so I had the door put in because I just want my toilet corner room to have a door for privacy. But way before my uncle’s reno, the bathroom was covered in this really dark and ugly wall paper. I ripped it off and painted the walls white. I like my bathroom to be airy and as spacious as possible..

I envy people that can do this kind of work themselves! My husband and I know our limits so we are working with a contractor (luckily he is also one of my best friend’s husband). I’m so excited to see the finished product! Agreed that baths should be light and airy – we have zero natural light in the room so are going with light tile to brighten it up.

I have done a couple of renos previously – once while we lived in the home (a nightmare as it was the only bathroom) and once before we moved into a house (a much easier process). We’ll hopefully be tackling the bathroom in our current house soon, something I’m both excited to do and dreading at the same time. Renos are such a mess, but so worth it in the end. Can’t wait to see your finished product – sounds like it will be beautiful! 🙂

I recently renovated my small master bath. It had one sink so my husband was using the hall bathroom while I used the master. For some reason we are always washing up and brushing our teeth at the same time! I put two sinks in the reno, (my husband’s a little sloppy), so we can be together again. He travels a lot so this us our quality time haha. So that’s what I love most, having two sinks. I absolutely disliked all the dust throughout the house. It’s worth it in the end though so keep that in mind.

I am so looking forward to double sinks! We have the same problem where we are always trying to get ready for work or bed at the same time and my husband gets sent to the hall bath. That always work once we have kids so we knew double sinks were a must (and like your husband, mine is a little sloppy- what is it with men and toothpaste or shaving cream that it gets everywhere?)

This sounds like an exciting project Jennifer. Happily, I have not lived through a bathroom renovation. Or should I say unhappily? I am always blown away by up-dated bathrooms. However, I don’t have the talent or budget so I love the one I have. 🙂
Looking forward to seeing pictures of the completed project.
