Dream Home…and Baby Steps

Hello!

I am not a blogger, so forgive what is probably going to be a long ramble that interests nobody…

I just wanted to introduce myself, I thought that first, I could talk a little about my Dream Home and then I’ll talk about how I’m staying content in my very NOT dream home that I’m living in right now.

Dream Home eye candy:

I’ve been married almost 4 years, my husband is a graduate mathematics student, so cash is not particularly  easy to come by. Currently our little home consists of me, my husband, our kitty Hobbes (yes, named after the tiger in the comic Calvin and Hobbes), and 4 hermit crabs named Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, and Archimedes.

While our duplex isn’t the best I can’t complain too much about our living arrangements, we have a roof over our heads and food to eat, which is something to be thankful for!. But, I am dreaming of the day (hopefully within the next 2 years) when he graduates, get’s a job, and I can quit work and stay home and have children.

This, of course, brings in the dreams of where I will keep said children. Hence: the house.

Since I have no illusions that we will be able to afford a maid, and I LOVE to garden and expect both myself and my family to be outdoors as much as possible, I long ago dispersed with the mansion/castle dream. Scrubbing the mud from dirty feet off all the floors of a castle sounds exhausting.

We’d actually love to buy a section of property and build a house (my father-in-law used to be a building contractor, and he said he’d build us a 5 bedroom house if we filled it with grandchildren for him. Not so sure about 5 kids, but the house would be nice! :)

It certainly would be nice to have some land though. I grew up on a farm in the middle of nowhere, and I don’t like being able to look into my neighbor’s windows (or vice versa). I also have grand ambitions of owning a couple of fields of Lavender to run as a U-Pick farm. :)

In the meantime, we live in a duplex with no yard (I think i’m going to go crazy not being able to plant anything!) and I swear the neighbors NEVER sleep! I guess we’ve just always had quiet neighbors before because these people are NOT.

The two main things that I hate about this place is how hideous the carpet is (poop-brown is not a flattering color on a floor) and the terrible texture on the walls/ceiling. I have a few ideas for things to help liven the place up, but i‘ll save that for another post because I want to ask advice on certain specifics.

In the meantime, if you’ve actually made it this far reading this post, imagine a soft, warm breeze on a spring morning, with fresh dew on the roses and lavender fields in the background of a lovely house filled with love and relaxing neutral tones.

Have a great day fellow home dreamers!

I read your post from beginning to end TWICE. You didn’t bore me at all. I am a night owl so that is why I am responding to your post now. And my 2 and half year old boy is also a night owl and on the mini IPAD right next to me. His older brother and sister are asleep. I like your honesty in expressing your dreams and desires. One step at a time and hopefully you will get there. It took me 10 years to make a house into a home I love. It’s no mansion but it’s way above average. Making any space into a real obode is a real skill thats needs to be learnt and honed. I like surfing this new site at night after I bid temporary farewell to my academic reading and writing because it is a bit of fun and healthy voyeurism to look into others’ home spaces. Hey if you post on here then you are inviting people to look at your home. I am not a blogger either, and it is not my dream to blog at all. So keep it up in gradually turning your place into a home you like.

I enjoyed your post too and it reminded me of the days when I was in your shoes. I’m happy to say that all my homemaking dreams eventually came true, though of course not exactly as I expected, and I wish all the same for you!
