#20littlethings

This is my #20littlethings in no particular order after the first picture. 1.  This is the view of the bayou from my back deck. We inherited the home from my in-laws when they passed. I must say I am going to sound spoiled. I loved my mother-in-law with all my heart, but we had very different tastes in home decor. However, a waterfront home is not to be turned down. I knew it had good bones and in time I would be able to place my mark on the home.

2. I love sitting out the bottom deck in the evening.

3. I love sitting on the top deck in the mornings.

4. I love my little container garden down by the water. I absolutely love to grow things. I think I there is just something so rewarding about planting something and then nurturing it

5. I love roses and geraniums. I can grow geraniums like crazy. Roses not so much, but I continue to try.

6. I spoke of the bones of this home. It has many built-ins that I adore. One of which is my family room that holds my love of books, but the most spectacular built-in is in the dining room. It is unbelievably gorgeous. It may be one of my very favorite things in the house.

7. Another of the cool features of this home is three octagonal areas across the back of the home. Each one is a little further out so that form all three rooms on both levels you get an unobstructed view of the bay. The first is in the kitchen. Our pub table where everyone seems to gather. Lots of good memories around that table.

8. The second octagonal room is in our family room. It is the most absolute perfect place for a Christmas tree. I donโ€™t have to move any furniture to love the Christmas tree. Other times it holds some plants and a scope for viewing wildlife across the bayou.

9. I love my bedroom. I have tried to create a serene place to rest.

10. I love my sewing room. A gift from Hubby when I retired last year. I love my counter that looks outside.

11. I love my storage all over the home, but especially in my sewing room.

12. I love my craft area and desk area.

13. I love little spots around the home that display the things you love and that evoke happy memories like this bookcase built by daddy in high school shop.

14. I love pieces of furniture that Hubby and I have picked out that are timeless and classic.

15. I love my kitchen island that I try REALLY hard to keep cleared off.

16. I love my family and my two doggies which make a house a real home.

17. I love that after many years, we have put our mark on this home.

18. I love that I was able to embrace many of things my mother-in-law chose for the house and that I really grew to love them.

19. I love that when we talk of downsizing now that our kids are grown, that they donโ€™t want us to. It is their home.

20. I love that it really is โ€œhome sweet home.โ€ and much more.

Wonderful post Sandy! You have so many amazing things about this home. Built-ins set my heart aflutter! You are so right about good bones and what a view! I love it!
I especially like your appreciation of the things that make a house a home. It makes me happy that you are enjoying your home and retired life. I, too, am a retired Home Economist. Although my life took many turns after my degree, I still am grateful that I have this degree. ๐Ÿ™‚
Wishing you happy days on the decks!

Thanks Nancy. I always love hearing from a fellow home economics person. I didn’t get to use my degree as I planned. I ended up teaching anything but home economics after the first three years, but I wouldn’t go back and change my major for anything. I loved everything about it.
      Thanks for your kind words.

Yep! A Home Economics degree can be useful in all aspects of your life. I taught Home Economics courses such as Child Studies and Human relations, Foods and Nutrition, and Sewing for many years but I also taught Drama, Leadership, and even one year of Economics ( Not my strong point!)
I am currently teaching my granddaughter to sew. She is almost nine and it is really fun to spend this time together. YAY Home Ec!

I KNEW this was back home in FL! ๐Ÿ˜€ I love your deck and water view. Your built ins are soo beautiful and I can’t imagine being able to hold all that stuff. How awesome!!!
I used to live in a community that had lakes all around it. I miss that the most… along with the lightening and thunder to go to sleep at night… which BTW I heard ya’ll got a lot last night!
Thank you for sharing your beautiful home. I can see why you are loving it. ๐Ÿ˜€

BTW, roses like it cool, but they can still do well in FL. Make sure you keep them watered from the roots, never let the sprinklers hit the flowers and leaves. Also, when you cut the rose, be sure to cut it right above an area that has 5 leaves. Hope that helps

What a gorgeous home! I would have to agree with you that no matter the taste that came before you, that view would not be something to pass up. The house is beautiful. I do love those built ins and all the windows. The fact that your kids call is home is the best part.

Thanks, I knew one of the kids would feel that way, but was surprised by the other one which really warmed my heart to the fact that we don’t necessarily need a smaller home. We can just close off the parts we aren’t using.

Thanks Jennifer, I am such a sentimental person that I actually had a hard time giving away our old dining room set when we moved in. It seems so nuts now, because that china cabinet is really AMAZING. I wonder now what I was thinking.
